Manasse, Young Refugee Artist, Nakivale Refugee Settlement, Uganda

Words of wisdom from the youth: "Without a vision, you cannot succeed"

It’s a short post today while I work on other interviews! I’m on the home stretch. It’s day 48 of 61 days of Small Art Big Heart, RainMakers & ChangeMakers series! So I am sticking with the artists today, who as I always say are some of the most amazing ChangeMakers out there.

Meet Manasse (Ashuza Kataruba Manasse), a young man of 14 years and a Congolese refugee living in the Nakivale Refugee Settlement in Uganda. He is a student at the Nakivale Young Talent Community organization which is both an artist collective and art education center teaching 40 youth between the ages of 5 and 15.

Manasse working on his self-portrait

Manasse is the second born in his family and lives with his parents. He joined NYTC as a student in 2023 and hopes to be a teacher some day soon.

He is working hard on his art techniques and skills always focusing on art because he says that one day art will change his life and the life of all of his family. - Akon Deograce, NYTC Founder and Director

Participation in Human Intelligence Badge DTIYS

Manasse participated (as did more than a handful of other NYTC artists) in the Draw This In Your Style Human Intelligence (DTIYS) badge hosted by

of the . Beth’s challenge has attracted the participation of over 1,200 artists; it was even recently highlighted in a Forbes magazine article! The full list of all H.I. badges can be viewed here on Instagram (hashtag #HIBadge2024). Here is Manasse’s contribution.

Process Video of Manasse’s Drawing “Vision”

The artists are always sending me pictures and videos of their process. This one is a beautiful short (40 second) video sharing Manasse’s process of drawing “Vision”, accompanied by music from

International’s Antoinette .

Hello everyone, My name is Ashuza Katuruba Manasse. I’m 14 years old and I am a student at Young Talent Community. I draw my art piece which talks about a vision of a person. As I have seen in life, without a vision, someone cannot succeed because your vision will help you to focus on what you are planning to do or who you are planning to be because I have seen that most football players started playing when they were still young as you can see the person I draw is focusing on what he is seeing. If you have a vision you can look for a wise person who is closer to you so that he can help you to fulfill your vision because there is someone you can share your ideas with. Then he discouragees you that’s why you can protect your vision. Thank you. By Ashuza Katuruba Manasse.

Where in the world is Manasse?
