Kulaba Ezekiel, Iganga Women & Youth Centre
Empowering marginalized women and youth to become self-reliant in Uganda
June 2, 2024 is Day 2 / 61 of the Index-Card-A-Day (ICAD) Instagram drawing challenge. It represents the second installment of the RainMakers & ChangeMakers Small Art Big Heart art and writing series.
Meet my friend, Kulaba Ezekiel, the founder of Iganga Women & Youth Resource Centre in Iganga, Uganda. Kulaba and I are both active members of the “Africa Permaculture Support Group,” a private Facebook group founded by
for East African permaculture practitioners and their supporters from around the world.Kulaba founded the Centre in 2017 together with 30+ community members with a vision to “empower marginalized women and youth to become self-reliant”.
Kulaba’s inspiration for starting the Centre is his second-born son, Mwesigwa Job, who passed away at age 14 from cardiac arrest.
In Kulaba’s words, “Job had a dream of of helping needy women and youth (orphans and widows inclusive). He had experienced difficulties in his education because getting fees was not an easy!”
In the Small Art Big Heart index card that I drew, I wanted to be sure I drew Job as the inspiration tfor he Centre, shining down on Kulaba in his work to assist children and women in need. In the original photo (shown below), Kulaba is shown with a woman and her children to whom he provides skills training, seeds, and other assistance.
Where in the world is Iganga, Uganda?
I think it’s important in these posts to help give a bit of geographic orientation and some context. Uganda is the size of Oregon with roughly 19 million people.
